The Charles Hughes House is a historic house at 11–15 Elm Street in Canterbury, New Hampshire. Built about 1797, it is a high-quality example of an early Federal period townhouse, with asymmetrical massing and a two-story portico. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Description and history
The Charles Hughes House is located northeast of the village center of Canterbury, at the northwest corner of Elm Street and Main Street. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a gable roof, two chimneys, and clapboard siding. Its main facade is five bays wide, with a pair of sash windows in the ground floor, and an entrance in the rightmost bay. A small polygonal window is located on either side of the entrance. A single-story porch is located at the left side of the building. A short ell extends to the rear.
The house was built c. 1797 for Charles Hughes, whose widow kept it until 1818, when it was purchased by his son, Thomas. A print from 1820 shows the house as it would have appeared at that time, with a high-pitch roof, extending to the rear, and a portico supported by four large Doric columns. The original porch was screened off in the 1880s. It is a well-preserved example of a Federal period house in New Hampshire.
